TIFF 2013 Day 10 & 11

Zip & Zap and the Marble Gang

Kids film about twins Zip and Zap who are sent to a boarding school where fun is not allowed.  They soon find themselves on a quest to find secret treasure hidden somewhere in the school.  Very Goonies-like, but actually better than the Goonies.  7/10

Witching and Bitching (Las brujas de Zugarramurdi)

Hilarious war-of-the-sexes film about a group of fleeing bank robbers who stumble upon a town of witches.  Low on plot, high on laughs, this is a fun movie.  The ending was a bit incongruous and could have benefited from being more ominous.  7/10

12 Years a Slave

Based on the true story of an educated black man who was born free, but was kidnapped and spirited to Georgia and sold as a slave.  Graphic depictions of the brutality of slavery, which is rarely seen in film.  Outstanding performances from Chiwetel Ejiofor and the rest of the cast, most notable Michael Fassbender, who played a character so different from his previous roles that I had trouble recognizing him when he first appeared on screen.  Excellent  execution on all fronts, this film is Oscar bait.  8.5/10
