TIFF 2013 Day 6

Under the Skin

Scarlett Johansson is an alien seductress luring unsuspecting men to their doom.  The natural question to ask is this film just another “Species”?  I wish that it were.  Although the plot and themes and visuals are interesting, the style can be described as experimental (this is a bad thing) and there is a minimum of dialogue.  If not for the style, this could be a good movie.  The good news is that Scarlett Johansson gets naked quite a lot.  4/10

Felony

Decorated and highly regarded police detective is involved with a felony drunk driving incident.  Police cover up ensues and the web of lies becomes tangled.  This is a well executed film with a good script, excellent acting performances especially from Tom Wilkinson, and good ending.  The problem is that I’m just not that interested in the subject matter, and the stakes are not that high as compared to other films in the thriller genre.  7/10

Almost Human

Zero budget grindhouse film about a man abducted by aliens who returns 2 years later and goes on a murderous rampage.  The story is dead simple, I didn’t like the cinematography, I didn’t like the colour correction, I didn’t like the editing (conversations had the wrong length of pause), and the acting is mostly bad.  I did like the makeup work and prosthetics.  For most of the film I was looking for a spark of originality, and I finally got it towards the end, otherwise it’s mostly derivative.  If you’re a fan of grindhouse films, you’ll probably like it more than I.  4/10
