TIFF 2011 Day 1

Back at the Ryerson for the first of this year’s Midnight Madness films.

The Raid

Indonesian chop socky film (and one of a few films to ever feature the Indonesian martial art of silat) about a police raid on a crime lord’s stronghold, gone horribly wrong.  Extremely violent, and doesn’t disappoint.  Lots of action (without a lot of intercutting), amazing fight choreography, and just enough plot to keep me interested.  The plot reminded me a bit of REC, except replace the zombies with thugs.  I thought I had seen everything there was to see with respect to fight moves, but apparently not.  Special kudos to Yayan Ruhian, who played the badass Mad Dog character and also co-choreographed the fight scenes. 8/10

Director Gareth Evans and actors Iko Uwais and Joe Taslim
